What is a Motor Vehicle Inspection?
A Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) is a comprehensive safety inspection required by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. It is designed to ensure that all vehicles on the road are safe and in good working condition. A Motor Vehicle Inspection is required when:
- Registering a used vehicle in Ontario
- Re-registering a vehicle that was previously salvaged
- Registering an out-of-province vehicle in Ontario
- Registering a vehicle that has been brought into Ontario from another country
- When a police officer or Ministry of Transportation enforcement officer requires a safety inspection
What is a Safety Certificate?
A Safety Certificate is a document issued by a licensed inspection station indicating that a vehicle has passed a safety inspection. The certificate is valid for 36 days from the date of issue and is required to register or transfer ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario. It is also required for out-of-province vehicles that are being registered in Ontario.
What is Checked During a Safety Inspection?
During a safety inspection, our licensed technicians will inspect various components of your vehicle, including:
Brakes: The brake system is inspected to ensure it is working properly and has sufficient stopping power.
Steering and Suspension: The steering and suspension system is checked to ensure it is functioning properly and is not worn or damaged.
Tires and Wheels: The condition of the tires and wheels is checked to ensure they are safe and in good condition.
Lighting: The headlights, taillights, turn signals, and other lights are inspected to ensure they are working properly.
Horn: The horn is checked to ensure it is working properly.
Windshield and Windows: The windshield and windows are inspected to ensure they are not cracked or damaged and that the wipers are working properly.
Vehicle Structure: The vehicle structure is inspected to ensure there is no damage or corrosion that could affect its safety.
What Happens if Your Vehicle Fails a Safety Inspection?
If your vehicle fails a safety inspection, our licensed technicians will provide you with a detailed report outlining the issues that need to be addressed. We will work with you to prioritize the repairs based on the severity of the issues and your budget. Once the repairs have been completed, we will re-inspect your vehicle and issue a Safety Certificate if it passes.
